![]() ![]() You can cover bad fillets with good paint but they’ll look like shit. “But what about those fillets? You can’t cover them up!” Well, good fillets and good paint go hand in hand. Without primer, the frame will eventually rust under the paint. This allows the paint to adhere correctly and protects the raw steel from oxidation. In order to protect your bike frame, you must use a primer. For the longevity of a steel frame’s lifespan, it needs to be properly primed and painted. Even in a matter of weeks it would be present. If you simply clear-coated or clear powdered a frame, it would rust. Rust destroys steel and the only thing that keeps it from forming is a primer. They’re evidence of a lot of precise work and while they look great raw, they need to be painted. If you’re a master at finishing, you take pride in your pinhole-free, smooth fillets. With social media becoming a powerful tool for builders, they expose a precious part of their process: bare fillets. I’ve heard just about every frame builder complain about the double-edged sword that is fine fillet brazing. We’ll use this photo from Tomii Cycles as an example, only because it’s the most recent, clean fillet photo I’ve seen on my Flickr feed. What came next was a very simple conversation that many frame builders have with their clients on why this isn’t a good idea. This is what came out of Lauren’s mouth when I showed her photos of her Icarus Porteur. So pretty! Can’t we just put a clear coat on it?” When clear coat start to fail, it can best be removed by a professional and re-painted.Photo by Nao Tomii Can you Clear Coat Raw Metal? Unfortunately, this can not be correction. It is sometimes compared to the surface “shedding its skin”. This results in a patchy looking paintwork. This can proof difficult to keep clean, but attracts attention to some that want something different. Some painted surface are not even finished with a clear coat, which results in a matte finish. This type of coat finishes with a glossy finish and does not have to be covered with a clear coat. This means the colored coat is also the last coat. Some ways of painting a surface can be such as “single stage” paint, or “uni paintwork”. Not mandatoryĪlthough it is very common, the clear coat is not mandatory. The thickness of this transparent layer affects the way light behave inside the layer of paint, and directly affects the type and level of gloss you get. The base coat and the colored coat are actually matte, the colored coat have different finishes, but is usually glossy. Eventually the colored coat is covered with the clear coat, the last coat to protect the paintwork. It is then covered with a layer of colored paint, sometimes even different colors over each other. It often begins with a layer of base coat which acts as a primer to help bond the paintwork to the material of the panel. The clear coat is one of several layers of paint that covers the panel. Clear coat is often cheaper then the colored coat, so adding a few layers of clear coat will increase the thickness of the paint without adding to much to the overall cost. The shape and dynamics of a vehicle are often based on the reflection of light and how this influences the look of a vehicle. Today, the paint used to protect the panel underneath has become a cosmetic property that can help with the sale of a vehicle. When colors where introduced, the aesthetic appeal of the paintwork grew. Over time, the paintwork had become more and more important for the overall look. ![]() To add a cheaper layer of paint while still adding protection of the panel underneathĪlthough paint has become a cosmetic item that adds to the “show ‘n shine” of a car, it was mainly used in the past to prevent the metal panel from rusting and suffering from exposure to the elements. To increase the overall thickness of the layer of paint. To change the reflective index, changing the level and type of gloss. To prevent oxidation of the colored coat.A clear coat can be used for several reasons, a few of these are: ![]()
